What is Sovereignty? Is it important? Why we needed it and what’s important about it? Those question always been asked among our people especially a politician student. Based on Merriam-Webster, sovereignty defined as ‘obsolete’ which is the supreme excellence or supreme power that especially into a body politic or for an autonomy which is a freedom from external power and for controlling influence. Based on business dictionary, sovereignty was an absolute, supreme and ultimate dominion for an authority of a political state subject to no higher power then been expressed within its territory in full self-government. Then, it was a complete freedom from any outside influence. Moreover, sovereignty defined as the authority in the decision-making process of the state and in the conservation of order based on political theory. The concept of sovereignty was one of the most controversial ideas in political science and international law. They also closely related to the difficult concepts of the state, government and democracy. For the example, in my country which is Malaysia, sovereignty was a necessary tool for our state. As our seventh Prime Minister of Malaysia, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad emphasized, the principles of the rule of law was a great concern for leading to the new Malaysia and was also an essential for our national philosophy, after Faith in God, Loyalty to the King and the State and the Supreme that which is in the ranked fourth from Rukun Negara Malaysia.
As we know, in the human association, the successful state-building was very important thing. It is the key for the promotion of human well-being. Niccolo Machiavelli distinguished as the father of modern political science and renowned work for The Prince (II Principe) in 1513 expressed that the state is to be worshipped even by sacrifing the individual for the interest of the state. He did not clearly formulate concept of sovereignty in the prince or the discourse. But, we think that he was a great guardian of absolute power. He continuously advised his prince to use an absolute power to achieve his objective which is union of Italy. To unify the various warring states of Italy was a sole objective for the prince according to Machiavelli thought. Besides, according to Machiavelli, sovereignty was simply a type of power which the prince could use. However, he conceptualized a central and close-knitted modern nation state. He also advised his prince to neglect or deny morality and religion. He described immoral behaviour such as dishonesty and the killing of innocents, as being normal and effective in politics plus to maintaining their power
