Venezuela I intend to address some disquieting

Venezuela was once praised for having a prodigious democracy but, what went wrong? How did civilian protests lead to a war on the streets of Venezuela? Many Americans are clueless as to what is happening outside of their nation. Today, I intend to address some disquieting issues in our present-day world.
Venezuela was once known as the richest country. It has the largest oil reserves in the world and was praised worldwide for its prodigious democracy. But today, the country’s democratic institutions and economy is in shambles. The country has the highest inflation rate in the world, which makes goods and services almost impossible to obtain for most Venezuelans. Over the last four years, Venezuela’s GDP has decreased 35%, which is a more poignant drop than the Great Depression in the United States. And the country’s murder rate has outweighed that of the most dangerous cities in the world. With these conditions, citizens to Venezuela has induced months of protests against the president, Nicolás Maduro. And it’s not hard to see why: the country has become significantly worse since his election in 2013. A poll conducted in October 2016 showed that about 80% of Venezuelans wanted Maduro out of office. But instead, the opposite has occurred: Maduro has solidified his power bringing the country to the brink of authorian rule.
In December 2015, just two years after he became president, Maduro’s political ambition was beginning to surface. An electoral coalition political party, known as the Democratic Unity Roundtable or MUD, won two-thirds majority of the National Assembly which put Maduro’s rule at risk. In return, Maduro retaliated by forcing out several Supreme Court justices and filled the positions with loyal subjects to him. In March 2017, the Supreme Court ruled that the powers of the National Assembly be stripped and taken over by the court. This move awoke massive protests across the country.
