The State Department explained that the terms “Near East” and “Middle East” were replaceable in 1958. It could also be called the Mideast, but Middle East sounds better.
The counties that are in the Middle East are: Israel, Iran, Syria, Turkey, KSA (Kingdom of Saudi Arabia), Egypt, UAE (United Arab Emirates), Iraq, Qatar, Lebanon, State of Palestine, Jordan, Yemen, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman and Cyprus. Sometimes Turkey, parts of Europe and North Africa are also considered as the Middle East.
Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, and Bangladesh are usually described as South Asia.
The name Middle East was originated in the 1850s in the British India Office. But after that, an American naval strategist, named Alfred Thayer Mahan used the word Middle East in 1902 to “designate the area between Arabia and India. The Central Part of this area is called the Near East. That name was given to it by some of the first modern Western geographers and historians.
The Middle East has seen many of the world’s oldest cultures and civilizations. The Middle East was the natural home to the first agriculture, and then to the first civilizations and a region of dry grasslands and fertile river plains.
