The song “Same Love” by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis featuring Mary Lambert is a song that represents equality for the gays.
“Same Love” (Macklemore & Lewis, 2013) starts off with a slow melodious piano introduction and starts with Macklemore rapping. Macklemore begins with, “When I was in the third grade, I thought that I was gay ‘Cause I could draw, my uncle was, and I kept my room straight” (Macklemore LLC, 2013, 0:55), these two lines talks about Macklemore’s past personal experiences when growing up because he liked artistic activities rather than masculine activities and the artistic activities are not considered masculine, according to stereotypes. This leads to “A preconceived idea of what it all meant For all those that like the same sex had the characteristics” (Macklemore LLC, 2013, 1:15), which states that at a young age the youths in society are told of the stereotype that gay men are ‘unmanly’. The gays get criticised for being who they are and are forced to be changed and “The right-wing conservatives think it’s a decision And you can be cured with some treatment and religion Man-made, rewiring of a predisposition Playing God, aw nah, here we go” (Macklemore LLC, 2013, 1:20), states that the right-wing conservatives, the religious men, they think that homosexuality is a choice and that it can be cured with treatment and religion. The treatment that they use is conversion therapy. According to the medical dictionary, ‘conversion therapy’ is defined as the psychiatric therapy aimed at changing a person’s sexual orientation. This method of therapy was made specifically for homosexuals and it was started by man and the lyric states that them trying to force a change is them trying to be like ‘God’.
This is an act of social change as it leaves the victim of the conversion feeling socially isolated which can lead to them being depressed and suicidal, and having anxiety. Macklemore writes “America the brave still fears what we don’t know And “God loves all his children” is somehow forgotten” (Macklemore LLC, 2013, 1:32), and this was inspired by the United States national anthem and it represents how the nation fears homosexuality and change. “God loves all his children” is stated in the bible but the religious people seem to forget that and remain aggressive towards homosexuals. The hook of the song is written by Mary Lambert and it starts off with “And I can’t change, even if I tried Even if I wanted to” (Macklemore LLC, 2013, 1:42), this talks about how homosexuality is not a choice and it is something that they cannot choose. The chorus continues on to “My love, my love, my love” (Macklemore LLC, 2013, 2:02), and this is referring to anyone and how they like to be loved no matter their sexual attractions.
The chorus ends with “She keeps me warm She keeps me warm She keeps me warm She keeps me warm” (Macklemore LLC, 2013, 2:04), and this piece of the lyrics was inspired by Lambert’s past experience with love, and growing up homosexual in a religious household.
