The purpose of this task provides an overview and a questionnaire survey designed on the Leadership style and its impact in Barclays Bank plc in the UK. This survey will apply a methodological approach to the satisfaction of employee in Barclays bank. According to Saunders et al, (2015) the use of a questionnaire is widely used in collecting data within business and management research. There are different understandings of what a questionnaire means, as they have a broad diversity of forms; however, they all fit within a survey strategy Oppenheim (2010). Therefore, a questionnaire could be termed as a collection of data techniques directed at eliciting data from each respondent answering the questions in a predetermined order. Questionnaire differs in many aspects, especially how they are administered, particularly in regards to the type of contact with the respondents De Vaus (2014). A questionnaire can come in many various forms. It could be self-administered, which are usually answered by the respondents, or recorded by the interviewer based on the respondents’ answers which is called the interviewer-administered questionnaire or the structured interview, this type of interview is done face-to-face between the respondent and the interviewer (Saunders et al., 2015).
With this in mind, the leadership style and its impact or influence on an employee satisfaction in Barclays bank plc as a case study, justifies this research a good topic. A number of studies on leadership styles (Kouzes and Posner, 2007) (Yukl, 2009) propose that the performance of the transformational leadership have a positive impact on employees. In most organisations, leaders consider employees as the prime source of fecundity. The satisfaction of an employee in an organisation has great significant effect. Ellickson and Logsdon, (2002) claims employee satisfaction is the magnitude to which employees appreciate their work. The satisfaction of an employee in their job, drives value, productivity and loyalty to the organisation Nicholson et al, (1978). However, employee satisfactions have been purportedly measured in many factors such as the employee morale, employee respect, employee motivation, employee benefits, expectations and achievements. Some of these factors describes the mood of the employees in the company, whether they are happy or sad, fulfilled or unfulfilled and contented on their job. Although employees have different reasons they are satisfied, feel downer or like a mediocre at their jobs, a questionnaire survey may be the best method to describe their satisfactory.
Saunders et al (2015) findings on questionnaires claim that the source of data collected in a questionnaire defines your research. Therefore, in collecting primary data, observation is vitally important when critically observing and interpreting behaviour. Some effective methods of collecting primary data could be through personal interview, whether a telephone interview or face-to-face (Ekinic, 2015). It is direct data collected from the respondent because the interviewer and respondent are both presents. Questionnaires, therefore, are used for descriptive and explanatory research. Descriptive research describes what is, it is aimed at throwing light to the current problems through a data collection such as questionnaire survey for organisational practices and the explanatory research examines the relationship between variables (Gill and Johnson 2010). Based on the empirical data, the research approach can be a deductive and inductive approach. The relationship between theory and research are often apparent to inductive and deductive approaches but however, the relationship for each approach differs. A deductive approach begins with a hypothesis, while the inductive approach narrows the scope of the study. They may have different research requirements, it is of advantage to link them in a mixed or multiple methods research designs Saunders et al, (2015).
However, this topic is to investigate the leadership style and its influence on employee satisfaction in an organisation, using Barclays bank, as a case study. The aim objective of this research is 1) identifying the factors which improve the satisfaction level of the employee in Barclays bank. 2) Accessing the satisfaction level of the employees in Barclays bank. 3) How does the leadership style affect their job?
In other words, an effective research topic, should be innovative and match your career goals, the resources should be available, particularly the data and time. The objectives of a research topic are to be clearly stated. It should have a clear link to the relevant literature with fresh insights Saunders et al (2015).
Saunders et al (2015), found that many authors (Bell and Waters 2014; Oppenheim, 2000) argued how impossible it is to produce an effective questionnaire, as a result, before a questionnaire is used, caution should be applied. It is necessary to ensure that the precise data collected reaches the aim and objectives of the research. This questionnaire will be collecting a quantitative data analysis. Quantitative analysis will be used, because this research is based on the satisfaction of the employees. This research methodology choice uses an inductive approach to collect a large amount of data from the employee of Barclays bank. Therefore, the respondents or population of this survey will be targeted on the employees of Barclays bank plc because they are most affected by the leadership style used by their management.
