A remarkable quote from Sophia is all about how the critics cannot speak about how the Chua-family is, because there were a lot of great moments:
“But for real, it’s not their fault. No outsider can know what our family is really like. They don’t hear us cracking up over each other’s jokes. They don’t see us eating our hamburgers with fried rice. They don’t know how much fun we have when the six of us — dogs included — squeeze into one bed and argue about what movies to download from Netflix” (line 21)
The language in the text is partwise formal and informal. For example in the lines 21 to 37, she uses a lot of contractions. In addition to this, she also uses a lot of pronouns in first and second person. More specifically, she uses “I” and “we” a lot. Even more importantly, she uses some slang. For example in line 32, when she said: “Maybe I got it from Daddy”. Sophia Chua-Rubenheld also uses elements from the formal style. Her sentences are long and completed. Furthermore, she has a large vocabulary and in addition to this, she uses elements from the hypotactic structure.
In contrast to Sophia Chua-Rubenfeld, A.S Neill thinks along other lines. A.S Neill is a teacher who established the school “Summerhill”. He emphasizes the importance of the children’s happiness in the General Policy Statement of the school. This can be seen at line 1: “I am not decrying learning. But learning should come after play.”
A.S. Neill uses a lot of examples of people that have been forced to reach a certain goal within the education, when they in reality were artistic and had to give up their own dreams, if they had to reach these academical goals. In addition to this, A.S. Neill writes in the statement that he has seen a lot of “successful” people, who has become doctors, lawyers and teachers. These people were not truly dedicated to their subject/job, because of their immense low happiness.
