The Mayflower compact was the first document to establish self-government in the New World and the first that successful. It created in 1620 by Pilgrims who travel into the New World seek for settlement and the religious freedom faraway from Church of England. Their destination supposed to be Virginia instead they end up in Massachusetts. So, to survived they must create their own self-government to maintain the peace among others.
The Mayflower compact was an agreement that unofficial which colonists agree upon it,
it in the form of a sacred covenant sworn before God. It was the document which established that, everyone in the colony must stay loyal to the motherland and the king, even though they must form their own government, the colonists would help each other and follow the Bible in order to survive. And the result of the compact is very well, it remained active for seventy years till the colony unite with Massachusetts Bay Colony.
