Also known as the “miracle drug”, penicillin was discovered in 1928 by a Scottish bacteriologist named Sir Alexander Fleming. If Alexander Fleming didn’t discover penicillin, many people would would have deadly diseases and infections. The discovery of penicillin was actually an accident , being it was a failed experiment of bacteria. He came back from vacation to find a mold that was killing some of his bacteria in one of his petri dishes in his lab. Which he later realized was a green mold called Penicillium notatum.

The discovery of penicillin completely changed the world of medicine with its ability to treat some diseases that people thought were deadly at the time. But now are basically considered treatable. Penicillin was one of the greatest discoveries of the 20th century, being how antibiotics are one of the most prescribed medications at the time. Its discovery is sometimes described as coincidental. Because the way it was discovered was kind of off. Penicillin and its derivatives have played such a vital role in everyday medicine so it’s a really important topic.

Before September 1928 , life proved to be pretty difficult for most people. This is mostly because most people were poor and humans had a much shorter lifespan. Bacterial infections were to blame for most of these early deaths. This is because almost all of these infections would spread very easily from person to person. Diseases such as syphilis, scarlet fever and pneumonia along with severe wounds, surgical infections and some cases of childbirth infections ended up killing hundreds per year. So the discovery of the world’s first antibiotic improved the lives of many.
