The In fact, it has been reported

The concept of media dependency can be traced to one of the earliest works in the field of communication as such the study of Ball-Rokeach and Deflaur (1976). According to the theory, a certain individual can only fulfill their needs and satisfaction through the use of media tools thus developing a certain kind of dependency (“Media Dependency Theory,” n.d.)
One of these tools is the social media, an emerging platform for communication and is one form of the media which many people utilize because of its beneficial attributes for its consumers. In fact, it has been reported that there is a dominant presence of social media in the daily lives of most adult using the platform because of various reasons such as easy socialization among other users (Pew Research Center, 2011 as cited by Ezumah, 2013).
As a concept, there is an argument between scholars regarding to the definition of the term social media (Ezumah, 2011). However, there are certain aspects and properties of the entity that the general would agree upon, this would be that social media originated from the idea of the earlier form that is the Web 2.0 that allows users to create their own content then disseminate it to the others (Kaplan and Haenlein, 2010, p.61 as cited by Whiting and Williams, 2013). Other widely accepted definitions based on the characteristics would be: (1) the ability to create electronic profiles online, (2) selection of people to socialize with, and (3) to see the contact of other users through their profile (Boyd and Ellison, 2008 as cited by Ezumah, 2013).
According to the latest research of Dreamgrow (2017), one of the leading social networking sites is Facebook with 2.07 billion active monthly users for its reach, engagement and demographics globally. Additionally, it has a total number of 1.66 billion mobile monthly active users, 1.36 billion desktop daily active users and 1.57 mobile daily active users (Aslam, 2018). In a specific demographic, there are almost 499 million daily active users in Asia that include Philippines with its expected 29.88 million Facebook users (Statisca, 2017; Smith, 2018). Among the Filipino users, the percentage of Facebook users aged 18-34 rank high are young adults composed of students and young professionals (“Facebook Reaches 30 Million Users in the Philippines,” 2013). To focus on the aspect of students, Facebook both have advantages and disadvantages among students despite its popularity (Zaremohzzabieh, Omar, Zobidah, Bolong and Kamarudin, 2014)
Moreover, the advantages of Facebook for students are: promotion of group study and collaboration with teacher, it’s a free platform for immediate sharing of information and can keep students connected (Economist, 2012).
