06(Source: mospi.nic.in)Table 21 depicts the growth rate of all the livestock species in Gujarat since 1956. It can be visualized from the table that cattle growth is quite high at 25 percent. This is due to the increase in more and more cross bred cow particularly Holstein-Friesian and Jersey which have high productivity.
Farmers are also getting loan under Government’s Dairy Entrepreneurship Development scheme through NABARD for setting up small dairy units of 2 to 10 animals comprising of cross-bred or high yielding indigenous cow or graded descript buffalo. This is also contributing towards increase in number of dairy animals. Sheep and goat are mainly reared by landless households who are not putting any special effort to increase the number.

During 2012, Gujarat was having 26 districts. The census also presented the livestock population for the then 26 districts. The findings clearly show that Banaskantha is leading in terms of total livestock population in the state, which is 2.5 million owing to highest number of buffalo and cross-bred cow in the district. Banaskantha is way ahead of all other districts in terms of milk production.
In 2012-13, the milk production in Banaskantha was 1.2 million tonnes which was close to 12 percent of state’s total milk production. Kutch has highest number of sheep.
The region is home of Kachchi breed of sheep which is reared basically for wool purpose. The sheep are reared twice a year for wool.The tribal district of Dahod has the highest number of goat. Goat is commonly reared for meat purpose in the region. Goat is called as “ATM or Any Time Money”. It is sold whenever there is need of money. Government is giving financial assistance to the scheduled caste people in the district for purchasing goat for rearing purpose.
Horses and camel are more in number in Kutch district. Camel, which is called as “ship of the desert” are more suitable in the desert area of Kutch where it is used for transportation purpose.
