Stephen, Peter, and Rina all have much to consider and weigh in their situation. Peter made the move. He resigned. But was this the best move? With this decision comes a bit of a gamble on how things will actually turn out. Like it or not, all three of them have been swept up in a delicate dance with power, influence, and persuasion. If a person truly has another’s best interest in mind, power, influence, and persuasion can be used to affect great amounts of positive change. The flip side of this is if a person is seeking to satisfy their own agenda, the use of power, influence, and persuasion can be destructive, abusive, and manipulative, perpetuating negativity.
“power is the ability to influence the behavior of others to get what you want” (University of Minnesota, 2010). It can be used for good, bringing about positive results or it can be used in abusive ways if coming from selfishly motivated people.
Power – “Discomfort with power reduces your power. Experts know that leaders need to feel comfortable with power. Those who feel uncomfortable with power send those signals out unconsciously.”
“Influence is the actual strategies and messages that individuals deploy to bring about desired attitudinal or behavioral change” (University of Arkansas System, 2016)
Influence – “You can make more friends in two months by becoming interested in other people than you can in two years by trying to get other people interested in you.”
