Special education consultants have different roles in the education process, which include determining suitable standards in the implementation of educational programs and evaluation of curriculum activities to ensure effective educational programs (Friend & Cook, 2016). Special education consultants are majorly concerned with supporting the special needs students by ensuring that they receive proper guidelines and instructions in educational programs. They may also have other responsibilities, which include diagnosing students with special needs and assessing students with the aim of determining any issues, which might be affecting the students in their learning process (Friend & Cook, 2016). In this scenario, Ms. Lujano who is a special education consultant has concerns with the way Mr. Santiago who has a class next to Ms. Lujano’s classroom uses his tone in directing Joey who has been diagnosed with an emotional disability.
Steps Intended To Resolve the Issues between Mr. Santiago and Joey
Based on the analysis, Joey has been diagnosed with emotional disability, which has impacted the student in different aspects of his life (Friend ; Cook, 2016). Joey has challenges in getting to class on time, controlling his emotions, and understanding personal boundaries. However, Mr. Santiago is unable to understand the student’s needs, which has led to a power struggle between the two of them (Friend & Cook, 2016). Mr. Santiago has also continued to yell at Joey, which may continue even for the entire class period and may even sometimes remove Joey from the classroom. This is not an effective approach, as it will lead to a negative effect on the student instead of helping the student (Friend & Cook, 2016). This situation can be addressed in a collaborative manner with Mr. Santiago who may be unaware of the negative effects of the currently applied strategy by implementing some of the steps discussed in this paper.
Building Strong Leadership and a Collaborative Relationship
It is important for special education consultants to have effective leadership from their seniors, which plays an important role in allowing the leaders to collaborate in educational programs and provide assistance whenever it is required (Hernandez, 2013). This will also help the special education consultants to communicate any challenges that they be experiencing with their students. This approach may also involve collaboration with other special education consultants where they are able to share the progress of their students and what effective strategies may work based on different case scenarios (Hernandez, 2013). Having a collaborative relationship is important in providing support to special education consultants where they face challenges, which is the case for Mr. Santiago in dealing with Joey.
The most important consideration of special needs students is their needs, which special education consultants must focus on addressing (Hernandez, 2013). This should not be affected by how the special education consultants feel, as it is their duty to provide educational services to these students (Hernandez, 2013). A collaborative relationship between Mr. Santiago and other special education consultants will help him in accessing important information, which may help him in determining the needs of Joey, which will lead to the implementation of an effective approach (Hernandez, 2013).
Support and Motivation
It is not easy for special education consultants to deal with their students as sometimes the special education consultants may experience challenges, which may negatively affect the learning process (Farrell, 2014). This may affect their delivery of services to these students, as is the case to Mr. Santiago and Joey. It is important to explain to Mr. Santiago on the importance of relating and understanding students and their unique needs (Farrell, 2014). This is meant to improve communication and trust between the special education consultant and the student. It is also important to support Mr. Santiago with whatever support that he needs in addressing the needs of Joey, which have posed a challenge to him (Farrell, 2014).
Since Mr. Santiago has not communicated any concerns with anyone, it seems that there might be communication challenges between Mr. Santiago and other members or Mr. Santiago probably thinks that he will not get any support from other members concerned (Farrell, 2014). It is important to assure special education consultants of any support required in addressing certain students, which will also improve communication and trust between the members of the organization (Farrell, 2014). Other special education consultants can also share their experiences on addressing similar situations, which can motivate special education consultants going through such.
Professional development involves the provision of learning opportunities to special education consultants, which is aimed at improving their knowledge and skills in their profession (Giuliani & Pierangelo, 2015). This is important as it helps special education consultants in addressing issues that are more challenging and in implementing effective educational strategies. From the analysis of the current situation, which Mr. Santiago is going through with his student, it is clear that the educational approach implemented is not working and Mr. Santiago has failed to look for an alternative to help Joey (Giuliani & Pierangelo, 2015). Professional development will help a special education consultant in creating an ideal learning environment and implement more effective learning strategies (Giuliani & Pierangelo, 2015).
Besides learning the best practices to implement to help special education consultants in providing their services to students, it is important that the special education consultants also learn on how to implement these strategies based on different scenarios (Giuliani & Pierangelo, 2015). Mr. Santiago can benefit from professional development course, which will improve his knowledge on handling different situations including the case of Joey. This will help Mr. Santiago in implementing effective strategies which would be easy to monitor and will lead to positive outcomes (Giuliani & Pierangelo, 2015).
Empowering Special Needs Students
It is important for Mr. Santiago to be trained on how to empower his students which is important in facilitating learning for these students and minimizing any tension between the special education consultants and their students (Karten, 2017). Mr. Santiago can empower Joey through adequate planning, preparing, and implementing an effective learning program, which will help him in developing realistic goals and objectives in the learning process based on the special needs of the students (Karten, 2017). Mr. Santiago yells at Joey because Joey may have failed to achieve the expected goals established. This means that Mr. Santiago has not clearly understood the needs of Joey and how they have impacted the student’s learning process (Karten, 2017).
Mr. Santiago can empower Joey, which will foster an effective learning process by understanding the strengths of Joey and any other skills, which can be used to improve the Joey’s learning process (Karten, 2017). Highlighting on the strengths of a student is the first and important step in finding effective solutions to implement in relation to the student’s learning process (Karten, 2017). This will also foster a collaborative approach between the special education consultant and the students, which will also lead to improved communication and trust. These two aspects are very important in ensuring a good working relationship with the student (Karten, 2017).
How to Foster Positive Communication between Mr. Santiago and Ms. Lujano
Communication is important is ensuring that different special education consultants play their roles and responsibilities effectively (Peer, 2016). In this case, Ms. Lujano has issues with Mr. Santiago by how he is handling Joey who is a special need student. Ms. Lujano has been following on the learning process of Joey where she thinks that Mr. Santiago is using an ineffective approach to help Joey (Peer, 2016). Effective communication between Mr. Santiago and Ms. Lujano is important to bring peace during classroom time and help Ms. Lujano in effectively administering her duties as a special education consultant. One way to foster positive communication between Mr. Santiago and Ms. Lujano is through collaboration, which means working together to achieve certain objectives (Peer, 2016).
Collaboration may be implanted by creating a suitable environment where special education consultants are able to discuss certain matters and share their opinions, which is meant to improve the educational process of special needs students (Peer, 2016). A good working environment can be created by improving the relationship between special education consultants, which will help them in sharing important information (Peer, 2016). The reason why Ms. Lujano went to another special education consultant may be due to a poor relationship between her and Mr. Santiago (Peer, 2016). The facility can also foster effective communication by developing effective lines of communication where special education consultants can first communicate with each other in addressing certain issues before involving other members of the facility (Peer, 2016).
Special education consultants have important responsibilities to special needs students, which should be effectively implemented to prevent the negative effects of ineffective approaches (Friend ; Cook, 2016). If Mr. Santiago does not change his educational approaches, Joey may be negatively affected by this approach worsening his condition. It is important for special education consultants to be trained on the best and effective approaches to be implemented based on different situations (Friend ; Cook, 2016). Special education consultants can also be trained on how to understand special needs students based on their different needs. This can be enhanced by creating a suitable working environment improving communication between special education consultants. Educational facilities can also establish a support center where special education consultants can access support to address some of the educational challenges, which they face. (Friend ; Cook, 2016).
