Grandma vs. Research
Life is just one long learning curve, we as individuals get our lessons from friends, teachers, colleagues, mothers, and even our grandma’s. Many of us might remember family stories that have been passed down from generations. Some of us might heard of the saying, ‘grandmas know best.” And where do we think our grandmothers learned everything from? From there grandmothers. Growing up my mother raised me up from the experiences her grandmother taught her. I was taught to respect the wisdom of my elders. According to Pillemer (2012), “the accumulated wisdom of older people our “expert” on living, can serve as a helpful guide for younger people” (pg. 2). He suggests that “elders bring experiential knowledge of just about every problem a human being can go through” (Pillemer, 2012, pg. 2). Meaning we as teenagers and middle age individuals can learn from our elders and use it to helps us look at our own situations in new ways and choose new ways of living that will make us happier. My Big Mama use to tell me, “A closed mouth don’t get fed. You have to speak up and tell people what you need and when help is necessary.” I personally believe this is true because if you don’t speak up, you won’t get what you want or need. I work with elderly patients, so I have always value the opinions from them, but some beliefs I have acquired through my own experiences in education or life. Those experience are what I use to guide me in certain areas. However, I do think one should also do their own research when trying to figure out what works best for their own children. My thought’s when it comes to “Grandma’s advice” is that it’s based on personal experience. Our grandmas are known for their wise thoughts and great advice. When we hear how something works from our elders it could be beneficial. Anecdotal evidence is based on testimony that are true rather than facts. I personally feel that plenty of anecdotal evidence supports this view; it is used in today’s world, especially in the advertising world. For example, every time we see a claim about a product’s effectiveness based on another person’s personal experience, we take their advice on why to buy it or not. In this case, research isn’t used, they are going by how it worked for them.
After viewing and studying the specific research methods from the Endless Questions video in relation to the study of happiness, the method that seems the most effective is correlation research method. This method not only shows us how we think or say that we are happy, but our body agrees with them. Happiness and health can go hand in hand and it can really show in an individual. For example, when an individual is depressed that person either stops eating or they eat abundance of food. When I became really depressed after my boyfriend passed away I lost a lot of weight that didn’t look very healthy on me. For the most part, when we observer others on how they move and act you can see from their body language if their happy or not. Most of the time surveys can work great as a research method. This type of research method can help an individual get a great amount of information at once and find out about more on an individuals life. The only down fall about surveys is that individuals can lie to please the individual who receives the survey. Nobody actually want to make an individual feel uncomfortable because they are unhappy. It’s best to make it anonymous when doing survey so that individuals can feel better about telling the truth and giving the right information.
It is important to utilize developmental theory to explain children’s development because it allows us to understand how different children change over the years. The different types of child developmental theories strive to focus and explain the way that children change and grown over year of their prime development stages. The theories also help individuals understand the reasons for the issues a child my face. These developmental theories focus on various aspects of development such as social, emotional, and cognitive and social growth. Not every child will develop at the same speed and the development theories helps us understand why that is. These theories also give us an overall of how a child’s development are suppose to progress so that we as individuals can be alert to any issues that may arise in our own children(s). The developmental theories are beneficial in helping an individual gaining a better understand into why children do certain thing as adults and allow parents to make changes to give their future generations a better chance.
The difference between scholarly research and personal experience can be easily diffcuilt. Scholarly research on development takes times and a lot of research. In order to make a conclusion, researcher must conduct a case studies, surveys, make hypotheses and gather information from observations. As I stated in the beginning of this paper, anecdotal evidence is band on personal experience and not on facts, but it is not tested or observed to know if it will really work. Scholarly research can help an individual understand child and adolescent development because it takes research and comparison of observation to make a conclusion. We all know that all children develop differently, but with a little help with scholarly research it can help us understand a certain age group of children. Some children reveal the same type of development or difficulty, with proven research, we as parents can use the research that has been done and implement into their homes and classrooms.
