Beginning on July 10, 1925, the Scopes Evolution Trial, widely known as the Scopes Monkey Trial, started out as a simple trial between creationists and evolutionists but quickly became a case that changed America . The 1920s was an age of dramatic, social, and political change, from women working in white collar jobs and given the right to vote to changes in education. For example, the Butler Act prohibited educators from teaching any theory that denied the story of creationism.
The Butler Act was put in place after evangelical believers started a movement called fundamentalism. Fundamentalism was the evangelical movement that taught the literal interpretation of the bible.
