CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background Information
Mathematics is the subject that is globally recognized as the mother of all learning other subjects like Arts and Sciences deriving their concepts from it. It plays a vital role in the scientific and technology improvement of any homeland, it is taught at all stages of education and it is needed in almost every pitch of life, such as technical, measurements, economics, handling money, etc Smith, D. (1988). Mathematics arouse the rational procedure of thinking in a way that it can be used to decide whether or not an idea is true or false, as it gives perception into the power of human mind and it explodes a challenge to intellectual interest. Hence, any individual who is proficient in Mathematics can similarly have the capability to do other courses.
Basic Mathematics is a module offered at University of Namibia to all the first year students that have or elect Mathematics as one of their major subjects. Basic Mathematics is designed and taught in two slots, namely; Slow Stream (a year module) and Fast Stream (semester module). The content concealed in both streams of Basic Mathematics is at Extended and Higher level. The module omits the content of Core Level Mathematics that is taught at high school whereas many students who are admitted to the university have done Core level. Over the years, students at the University of Namibia has shown poor performance in basic mathematics modules. Mostly students that did their mathematics on core level at high school. Discussing this factors that affect students’ performance will require us to look at the concept of poor performance. Therefore, any performance that is lower than the desired standard can be referred to as poor performance. At the University of Namibia, any grade lower than 50% is considered as poor or fail and this research will consider a performance of 60% upward being as a good performance because Mathematics is the major subject of mathematics students.
The researcher believes that for one to choose a certain major subject, he or she has to choose the subject that he/she have performed well in grade 12 and the subject he or she enjoys most, therefore a good performance is highly expected.
This study will inspect the factors that affect the performance of all students who failed and have repeated Basic Mathematics module once or numerous times and those who are still doing it. The intention is to establish the approaches that can be adopted to improve performance among students who are majoring in Mathematics at the University of Namibia, precisely at HP Campus.
1.2 Problem Statement
Basic Mathematics is the first-year module for all Mathematics student teachers at HP Campus. Over the academic years 2015 to 2017, students have to repeat Basic Mathematics module or graduates with low grades. Due to that poor performance in Basic Mathematics, several students end up not finalizing the fourth year’s programme, while other students change courses and transfer to other departments. Therefore, this research study will look at the factors that affect students’ academic performance in Basic Mathematics module. The researcher will also check if the teaching methods used at the University of Namibia has some substantial influences on students, such as destructive outlook and expansion of anxiety toward Basic Mathematics module.
This leads one to ask questions like: is the underperformances in Basic mathematics linked to prior mathematics achievement at the high school level or is the underperformance connected to other factors?
