Acording to gay andairisian (2000:275), descriptiv study determine and describes the way thingsare. It means .The researcher implemented descriptve researchbecuse researcher B. ParticipantTo get informtion aboutthe data the researcher took the students of english department in the thirdgrade of STKIP PGRI Sumatera Barat.
according to Gay and Airasian (2000:281) inselecting research participant, the participant should be;1) able to providethe desire information and, 2) willing to provide it to rearcher. The englishstudents STKIP PGRI Sumatera Barat of the third grade had 106 students fromthree session (A, B, C). Thus in this research the researcher choose A session 2016 have 32 students. The purposeof this research is to analysis the students ability in translating a text.
C. InstrumentationInstrumentation is a tool forcollecting the data in a research. Gay and airasian (2000:145) explain thatinstrument is a tool or something that is use to collect the data. D. Techniqueof Data collectionIn gathering the datain the field, the researcher did some steps as follow:a) Selected some third semester studentsin STKIP PGRI Sumatera Barat especially from English Department.b) Distributing the test to thestudents.
c) Checking the students? answer. d) Analyzing students? result e) Making conclusion. E. Technique of data AnalysisAfter collecting the data theresearcher analyzed based on the instrumentation given.
according to gay andairasian (2000:239) there are four steps of analyzing the data ; reading/memoring, describing, classifying, and interpretinga) Reading/ memoring, becoming familiarwith the data and identyfying the main themes. In this research, the researcherread data from all of instrument.it was done to makethe researcher tounderstand about the data was gotten.b) B) describing, examining the data indepth to provide detail description of setting, participants, and activties.c) Classyfying , categorrizing andcoding pieces of data and physically grouping them into themes.
In thisresearch the researcher clasified the students ability in translating grammarequivalence. First the researcher gave score of the essay. Next the researchercalculated the toatal point of the answer of students. In analysing the data, the writer follows the steps: Collecting the students? answersheets and giving score by analysing the answer. Maximum score for eachquestion is 3. To find out, the writer uses theformula: Where P : the percentage scoreof students? ability M : the mean N : the maximum score Toclasify the level of students? ability, the writer uses theory from Haris whodivided it into four level, namelyTable 3.6 Level Mastery Scale Categories 80% – 100% Excellent 60% – 79% Good 50% – 59% Fair 0% – 49% Poor Where the levels mean: Excellent : Translation isaccurate and acceptable. Good : Translation isless-accurate with minimum omission, addition and minimuminappropriate words. Fair : Different meaning, thereare some inappropriate words. Poor : Unclear meaning,ambigous, a lot of grammatical errors and inappropriate words.
Fromthis result, the writer will able know how good are the students in translatinggrammatical equivalence.
