Assignment #5Assignment #5Sultan Al-ShawwaPierce College Introduction The IAEA, in which is also called The International Atomic Energy Agency, is an international organization that seeks to promote the peaceful use of nuclear energy, and to inhibit its use for any military purpose, including nuclear weapons. They even do publications in which I found to be interesting, showing that they are still valuable and useful to the public, “The IAEA is a leading publisher in the nuclear field. Its more than 9,000 scientific and technical publications include international safety standards, technical guides, conference proceedings and scientific reports. They cover the breadth of the IAEA’s work, focusing on nuclear power, radiation therapy, nuclear safety and security, and nuclear law, among others” (IAEA). United States The United States of America is a strong supporter of the IAEA; they contribute many funds to it, and help them tremendously.

Since 2002, the United States has contributed over one hundred million dollars to the Nuclear Security Fund, in which they do support the International Atomic Energy Agency. “The United States works with the IAEA’s Department of Nuclear Energy to convert research reactors and isotope production facilities from HEU to LEU fuel and targets and remove HEU once it is no longer required” (White House, Press Secretary). Till this day, the United States still tends to work very closely with this organization, in which gives us as a nation, an upper hand. The United States supports the IAEA and Member States to improve emergency preparedness and response capabilities by providing expertise to develop guidance, conducting training courses on emergency management, and maintaining capabilitiesIndia India has been a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), a UN organization set up to promote peaceful uses of atomic energy, since its inception in 1957. India is still trying to work very heavily with IAEA and to build their relationships as well. India is estimated to have enough fissile material for more than 150 warheads.

India was among the few countries to have a no first use policy, a pledge not to use nuclear weapons unless first attacked by an adversary using nuclear weapons, but this concept and rule is yet to change depending on the current individual in charge. India does approve of this, as it is advocating peace, and wish for other countries to be apart of this as well as it can be truly beneficial for all and set standards and a discipline. South Africa South Africa is a uniquely strange country and an inspirational country as they are of the few countries that have conducted weapons for warfare by hand. They are also located in a very rich rural area with many beneficial factors.

South Africa has a large supply of uranium, which is mined in the country’s gold mines. The government built a nuclear research facility at Pelindaba near Pretoria, where uranium was enriched to fuel grade for the Koeberg Nuclear Power Station as well as weapon grade for bomb production. Ever since 1991 due to the high demand of International pressure, they were forced to sign the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treat.

In 1993, the then the president at the time in which was Frederik Willem de Klerk, openly admitted that the country had developed a limited nuclear weapon capability. These weapons were subsequently dismantled before South Africa acceded to the NPT and opened itself up to IAEA inspection. In 1994, the IAEA completed its work and declared that the country had fully dismantled its nuclear weapons program. Due to the emergence of their nuclear power and military power itself, they are pro the IAEA.Israel Israel, being a very strong and fast growing country has acquired nuclear powers ever since their forming of their nation with the aid from the United States. Israel may have stockpiled between 100 and 200 warheads using reprocessed plutonium.

The position on the NPT is explained in terms of “Israeli exceptionality” (Steinberg). The Israeli government refuses to confirm or deny possession of nuclear weapons, although this is now regarded as an open secret after Israeli low level nuclear. On 18 September 2009 the General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency called on Israel to open its nuclear facilities to IAEA inspection and adhere to the non-proliferation treaty as part of a resolution on “Israeli nuclear capabilities,” which had passed. The chief Israeli delegate stated, “Israel will not co-operate in any matter with this resolution.

Israel till this day does not support the treaty, and are yet to believe the idea of them having any nuclear weapons. Conclusion I personally support this concept of having such provisions and regulations. At the end of they day, the are very beneficial, and the concept of war has an impact on everyone, and having these organizations for example in the world to ensure the safety of the public, and to ensure a sense of unity and procedural work, is very reassuring to the general public. Many countries may oppose this due to the fact that they do not want any restrictions opposed on them and for other nations to dig in, yet this can be dangerous and with these types of organizations, it ensures the publics safety.
