Before then they did not have the right to vote. Women were “segregated” meaning they did not have the same rights as others, specifically they could not vote and were not paid a lot of money for being women . Susan B. Anthony was a major role as to why women can now vote. She did many things from finding an association to doing speeches. This all began when she was a part of different movements like the abolishment and temperance movements.
She was denied the right to speak, for being a women leading to her fighting for women’s rights and working for them to be able to vote. Throughout history there have been many social issues that still affect the world today, one being women’s rights. Susan B. Anthony was a women’s rights activist. She was born on February 15, 1820.
Everything Susan B. Anthony did help lead to women getting their rights to vote, “Her work helped pave the way for the Nineteenth Amendment (1920) to the Constitution, giving women the right to vote”, (Susan B. Anthony). She grew up in a family that was very involved in politics. Before she started campaigning for women she was in different movements like wanting to end slavery and going against alcohol. She was also a teacher and earned only $110 a year, “In 1853 at the state teachers’ convention Anthony called for women to be admitted to the professions and for better pay for women teachers”, (“Biography of Susan B.
Anthony”). Overall women weren’t getting treated equally as men which most definitely bothered Susan and other women which is why she then started associations and started to do speeches. She did not only fight for women but also went against abortion and alcohol.
” She believed, as did many of the feminists of her era, that only the achievement of women’s equality and freedom would end the need for abortion. Anthony used her anti-abortion writings as yet another argument for women’s rights”, ( Jone Johnson Lewis). Susan B. Anthony never gave up till the day she passed. She never got to see women get the right to vote as she died on March 13, 1906, which was fourteen years before the nineteenth amendment was passed giving women the right to vote.
Susan B. Anthony wanted to grant women the right to vote. This occurred because she was not granted the right to speak during a temperance convention. ” She denied a chance to speak at a temperance convention because she was a women”, ( “Susan B. Anthony”). According to the article , ” Susan B. Anthony” Susan realized that she wanted women to vote as they would not be taken seriously politically if they could not vote.
Susan B. Anthony did not do it all alone she had some help by Elizabeth Cady Stanton who was also an activist. “A friendship with Amelia Bloomer led to a meeting with Elizabeth Cady Stanton, who was to become her lifelong partner in political organizing, especially for women’s rights and woman suffrage”, ( Jone Johnson Lewis).
Therefore leading to them both working together for the rights of women. In 1869, The National Woman Suffrage was founded, ” Considered the more radical of the two, the NWSA gave priority to securing women the right to vote, and the group often stirred public debate through its reform proposals on a number of social issues, including marriage and divorce”, (” The Editors of Encyclopaedia Britannica”). Overall, the association helped women with their rights and fighting for them. She was the organizer of the association, and took the spot very seriously as she campaigned a lot and wanted people to join her side in fighting for the rights of women, as so did her partner Elizabeth. “Elizabeth Cady Stanton, married and mother to a number of children, served as the writer and idea-person of the two, and Susan B. Anthony, never married, was more often the organizer and the one who traveled, spoke widely, and bore the brunt of antagonistic public opinion”, ( Jone Johnson Lewis). Susan B. Anthony never gave up she gave speeches around the country about women and there right to voting.
Showing awareness against women rights was not easy for her, some people did not support the things she said and took it the wrong way therefore being rude to her. “She encountered hostile mobs, armed threats, and things thrown at her”, (” Biography of Susan B. Anthony”).
Susan B. Anthony continued to campaign until her death on March 13, 1906. In 1920, four years after she had passed the 19th amendment giving women the right to vote was passed. Since Susan B. Anthony never gave up and showed dedication to what she did, they put her portrait on a dollar coin in 1979. “In recognition of her dedication and hard work, the U.
S. Treasury Department put Anthony’s portrait on one dollar coins in 1979, making her the first woman to be so honored”, ( “Susan B. Anthony”).Women were not allowed to vote before 1919. Women were not to be involved in politics but rather motherhood and housework. Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton wanted to change that and wanted women to be more equal like men. They believed women should have a better opportunity to education and employment.
Ever since Susan B. Anthony got denied access to speak for being a woman she wanted to stand up for women and the rights they deserve. After Susan B. Anthony’s campaigning and the government not wanting to listen she gathered signatures to try and help. “In 1877, she gathered petitions from 26 states with 10,000 signatures, but Congress laughed at them”, (“Biography of Susan B.
Anthony”). The government just did not want women to vote as they did not want them involved in politics. It was not easy at all to have the law passed. But eventually after all the movements Susan B. Anthony did they granted women the right to vote, “All American adult women finally got the vote with the Nineteenth Amendment, also known as the Susan B. Anthony Amendment, in 1920”, (“Biography of Susan B. Anthony”). Susan B.
Anthony did not get to see this law passed as she died prior to it, “When Anthony died on March 13, 1906, women still did not have the right to vote. It wasn’t until 1920, 14 years after her death, that the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, giving all adult women the right to vote, was passed”, (“Susan B. Anthony”).Major stakeholders include women, government, and civil society. To begin with women played a major role as it was women campaigning for the law to be passed and to be treated more equally.
Don’t get me wrong some men did help the women campaign but it was mainly women. Susan B. Anthony , Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and Amelia Bloomer were some of the main women that were involved with women getting their rights.
” In 1860, largely as the result of her efforts, the New York State Married Women’s Property Bill became law, allowing married women to own property, keep their own wages, and have custody of their children”, ( “Biography of Susan B. Anthony”). They did not only fight for voting rights, but as well as rights in wages. Government also played a major role as they did not want women to have the rights, as it would take away from them being housewives. They believed if they got involved in politics they would not perform their duties at home. “She appeared before every congress from 1869 to 1906 to ask for passage of a suffrage amendment”, (“Biography of Susan B.
Anthony”). She was very persistent on women getting their rights, but the government just did not cooperate very well. Lastly Civil Society is the last major role. Women were just trying to be as equal as men and wanted their voice to be heard as well.
Susan B. Anthony just wanted women to vote, have the same wages as men, and overall get treated more equally. “Anthony was tireless in her efforts, giving speeches around the country to convince others to support a woman’s right to vote”, (“Susan B.
Anthony”). She was tired of not having her voice heard, and wanted to stand up in what she believed in even though some did not agree, “As a delegate to the National Labor Congress in 1868 Anthony persuaded the committee on female labor to call for votes for women and equal pay for equal work, although the men at the conference deleted the reference to the vote”, (“Biography of Susan B. Anthony”).Susan B. Anthony did face some legal proponents because of the social issue she was fighting for. Susan B. Anthony casted a vote in 1972 illegally, which did not go well with the government as they tried to send her to jail.
“She even took matters into her own hands in 1872 when she voted in the presidential election illegally”, ( “Susan B. Anthony”). Susan B. Anthony was never imprisoned but she was charged with an hundred dollar fine that she never paid, but her lawyer paid it for her.
” He fined her $100 and made her pay courtroom fees, but did not imprison her when she refused to pay, therefore denying her the chance to appeal”, (” Biography of Susan B. Anthony”).Since Susan B. Anthony was tried and not sent to jail her fine was paid, and afterwards she did not face any legal issues.
” She refused to pay bail and applied for habeas corpus, but her lawyer paid the bail, keeping the case from the Supreme Court”, (“Biography of Susan B. Anthony”). To continue wanting to give women more rights she met with president Roosevelt to discuss the issues of the rights of women.
She did not only want women to have rights in voting but also in owning property. In 1905 was when Susan B. Anthony met with president Roosevelt to discuss the issues of women and them not getting treated as equally as men. ” In 1905, she met with President Theodore Roosevelt in Washington, D.C., to lobby for an amendment to give women the right to vote”, (” Susan B. Anthony Biography”). The law of giving women the right to vote took a while to be passed as it was a big deal, because then women would be politically involved in social issues.
Susan B. Anthony to raise awareness about the issue of women made speeches. “Anthony was tireless in her efforts, giving speeches around the country to convince others to support a woman’s right to vote”, ( “Susan B. Anthony”).
She made speeches to try and show the world that women being segregated from doing certain things is not okay. Susan B. Anthony made articles as well as some books about the issues that went around about women and them being segregated. “Around this time, the two created and produced The Revolution, a weekly publication that lobbied for women’s rights”, (” Susan B. Anthony”). She did not do it alone but with the help of Elizabeth and making the articles with her as well as helping her along the way. On the topic of Susan B.
Anthony writing articles and papers, she did not do it alone but with help of other women. The articles were mainly on women and the rights they deserve to have. The articles were also on equal rights for all. “Anthony continued to campaign for equal rights for all American citizens, including people who had been enslaved, in her newspaper The Revolution, which she began publishing in Rochester in 1868″, (” Biography of Susan B.
Anthony”). The paper then progressed onto being more on women and what rights they deserve to have, “In 1866 Anthony and Stanton founded the American Equal Rights Association and in 1868 they started publishing the newspaper The Revolution in Rochester, with the masthead "Men their rights, and nothing more; women, their rights, and nothing less," and the aim of establishing "justice for all”, ( “Susan B. Anthony”). She even published a book with her partner Elizabeth about women, “In the early 1880s, Anthony published the first volume of History of Woman Suffrage — a project that she co-edited with Stanton, Ida Husted Harper and Matilda Joslyn Gage. Several more volumes would follow”, (“Biography of Susan B. Anthony”).Women now have the right to vote and do a lot more things that men can do as well. As for an example would be voting rights, and being more involved in politics.
Susan B. Anthony was major role as to why this is all possible, but of course as well as the women that helped her accomplish it all. Although in some places women are not as equal, we are slowly but surely making it more known that women play an important role. They contribute a lot politically which is very useful. Overall women getting the right to vote and not being segregated from doing certain things made a huge impact as to how things now are.
