An illegal immigrant is someone who enters the United States without any proper documentation or if they have lived here with an expired visa. Many argue how it can economically benefit the U.S., while others take in consideration that these migrants have broken the law by crossing the border illegally. There are over 11 million illegal immigrants living in the United States currently, and there are still several discussions about whether or not the government should allow these immigrants to become legal U.S. citizens.
Based on credible research and information, the United States should consider allowing these illegal immigrants a chance to become legal citizens of the U.S. There are some benefits of having this massive number of immigrants living here in the U.S. as seen with applying for jobs Americans don’t take, can help with tax revenue, and low-cost labor. According to an immigration reporter for Think Progress, “the U.S. GDP would grow by $1.4 trillion over a ten year period, immigrants would help to create an additional 203,000 jobs per year, and add $184 billion in tax revenue” (ProCon.org). Therefore, with the presence of immigrants in this country, our economy would flourish, and the United States would be able to fund more public services and other educational programs. Another source indicates that immigrants make up 33 percent of engineers, 27 percent of mathematicians, statisticians, and computer scientists as well as 24 percent of physical scientists (Furman ; Gray). With immigrants being able to take on jobs that some Americans don’t aspire to, our society is able to continuously prosper due to beneficial characteristics of these professions. Furthermore, the 44th President of the United States, Barack Obama, had recommended in 2013 a fair solution to the illegal immigration problem as a means to “lift these individuals out of the shadows and give them a chance to earn their way to a green card and eventually citizenship” (ProCon.org,). With this solution many illegal immigrants will be able to become citizens, even though it won’t be a quick process, and it will be fair to other immigrants who have been trying to come to this country legally.
However, there is still the concern about the benefits that several illegal immigrants have access to by living in the United States. There are other immigrants, who are legally trying to enter the U. S. that have to go through several long procedures unlike illegal immigrants. According to Ted Cruz, “As long as they get to remain in the United States legally, they will have jumped ahead of those in their home countries…they will be able to have children born here that will be granted automatic American citizenship” (ProCon.org). Although, with the new solution that Obama has proposed these immigrants will go through a process of passing a background check, tax payments, paying for penalties, learning the English language to then go back to the line behind every other immigrant who has been legally trying to enter the U.S. (ProCon.org). Other arguments indicate that with illegal immigrants in this country, there will be higher crime rates, endangering several innocent American citizens. According to the FAIR organization, Robert Galo, an illegal immigrant from Honduras killed Drew Rosenberg by running him over three times with his car (2018). This is just one of the many mass murders that several illegal immigrants have committed but, over the past several years, “FBI data indicate that the violent crime rate declined 48 percent…Likewise, the property crime rate declined by 41 percent (ProCon.org).
Overall, based on several concrete information and research, I believe that the United States government should grant illegal immigrants a pathway to citizenship. By granting them legal citizenship, many economic and social benefits along with the massive amount of diversity, will enable our country to experience and learn from several different cultures. In all, there are many opportunities for several immigrants to succeed and triumph within this country along with other fellow American citizens, allowing this country as a whole to successfully prosper.
