A smart city is nothing but avision to integrate several information and communication technology Informationand communication technology (ICT) along with Internet of- Things IoT in a wayso as to manage a city assets. To make the cities greener, safer, and moreefficient, Internet of Things (IoT) can play an important role. Improvement insafety and quality of life can be achieved by connecting devices, vehicles andinfrastructure all around in a city. The city’s assets include, among others, the local departments, information systems, libraries, schools, hospitals, waste management systems, transportation systems etc. Currently, Indian citiesaccommodate nearly 31 percent of current population and contributes to 63percent of GDP (Census 2014). Urban areas are expected to house 40 percent ofIndias population and contribute 75 percent of Indias GDP by 2030.Worldwide interestin Smart Cities has aggrandized, fostered by the need to find effectiveremedies to the major challenges foreseen for the next years.
As one of the application ofSmart City, Waste Management in a city is a formidable challenge faced by thepublic administrations. Waste is nothing but any material in which somethingvaluable is not being used or is not usable and represents no economic value toits owner. The generation and disposal of waste in large quantities has createda greater concern over time for the world which is adversely affecting thehuman lives and environmental conditions.Wastes are the one which grows withthe growth of the country. Segregation of waste is important for proper disposalof vast amount of garbage modern society produces in an environmentally sensiblemode. People became adapted to tossing things away and never realize theconsequences of their action.
The purpose of this project isthe realization of a compact, low cost and user friendly segregation system forurban households to streamline the waste management process.so that the wasteis segregated in basic streams and then waste could be reused or recycled.Thebenefits of doing so are that a higher quality of the material is retained for recyclingwhich means that more value could be recovered from the waste. We propose asmart waste collection system on the basis of level of wastes present in thewaste bins.
The data obtained through sensors is transmitted over the Internetto a server for storage and processing mechanisms. It is used for monitoringthe daily selection of waste bins, based on which the routes to pick several ofthe waste bins from different locations are decided. Every day, the workersreceive the updated optimized routes in their navigational devices. Each levelof bin is measured using sensor,if the level reaches the threshold level thenthe message and location of bin is sent to the worker.
