1.0 INTRODUCTION A World Heritage Site is a landmark or area which is selected by theUnited Nation Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) ashaving cultural, historical, scientific or other form of significance and islegally protected by international treaties. The sites are judged important tothe collective interests of humanity.
The Kinabalu Park, Kundasang Ranau Sabah is one of the UNESCO World HeritageSite. It is officially recognised by the UNESCO in year 2000. It is had been 17years after the recognition by the UNESCO and it is an honour because therecognition is one of the biggest achievement of Malaysia.The Kinabalu Park is located in Kundasang Ranau Sabah. It is one of the placewhich is always been an attraction by the international and local tourist.
Thisis because we can see a clearly view of Mount Kinabalu in Kinabalu Park. TheMount Kinabalu is one of the highest mountain in the southeast asia. This isalso one of the reason why Kinabalu Park always been a favourite travel places.Moreover, the tourist can see the beauty of the nature by themselves since theplace had been preserved to maintain the nature.
In the same time, there arevarious socio-cultures which is still being practiced until today.Tourism is seen as the largest industry worldwide which give a high environmentimpact to the country. Plus, this industry is one of the sources to increasethe economy of a country. Touri45sm is travelfor pleasure or business also the theory andpractice of touring, the business of attracting, accommodating, and entertainingtourists, and the business of operating tours.
Moreover, tourism may beinternational, or within the traveller’s country. Other than that, tourism industry is an industry which is very close to ourgovernance system. This is because the tourism industry helps to improve oureconomy growth and help to stabilize the economic system. We can see throughthe Budget 2018 allocation on tourism industry by which the Prime Minister ofMalaysia, Datuk Najib Tun Abdul Razak allocate RM2 billion to improve thetourism industry including improving the tourism facilities, homestay, andeco-tourism programmes.The eco-tourism can be defining as a responsible travel to naturalareas that conserves the environment, sustains the well-being of the localpeople, and involves interpretation and education” (TIES, 2015). Inother word, eco-tourism is the combination of two words which are economy andtourism. From the words itself we can say that tourism industry is so importantfor our economy industry.
Tourism industry is not only about to improve the country economic conditionbut also to help the country in making the international relation with theoutsider. As we know, tourism can be done internationally which involving theinternational tourists. While making profits for the country, a country maycreate an international relation with the others. 1.1 PROBLEMSTATEMENTMalaysia has declared Kinabalu Parkas a National Park in 1964. Since then, its become one of the major of touristattraction in Sabah. In year 2000, UNESCO declared Kinabalu Park as its WorldHeritage Site. However, Kinabalu Park is already become become main attractionof tourist since 1964 as such this declaration does not do much to tourism insabah.
It is been said that such a declaration has been a catalyst to thesocio-economic growth to the local community’s. This study seek to assess ifand to what extent such a declaration has anticipated to the local community’ssocio-economic growth. 1.2 RESEARCHQUESTIONIn this study, there are severalresearch questions that conducted which highlight on the contribution of theUNESCO World Heritage Site declaration on Kinabalu Park to the localcommunity’s socio-economic growth in Kinabalu Park, Sabah. What is the effect of the declaration by the UNESCO World Heritage Site on the socio-economic growth of the local community’s? What kind of activities being conducted by the local communities around the Kinabalu Park? How much or how far the declaration of UNESCO gives impact to the socio-economic growth? 1.3 RESEARCH OBJECTIVES The objectives of the study are as follows: To identify the effect of UNESCO declaration towards the socio-economic growth of the local community’s.
To determine what kind of activities being done by the local community’s around Kinabalu Park. To assess on how much the declaration gives impact to the socio-economic growth. 1.4 SCOPE OF THE STUDYResearchers focused on thesocio-economic activities around the area of Kinabalu Park, Kundasang Ranau.Plus, the study also covered the contribution of UNESCO recognition toward thesocio-economic growth in this area and the effects on the peoples.The Kinabalu Park, Kundasang Ranau is one of the World Heritage Siterecognized by the UNESCO others than 3 other areas in Malaysia which areArchaeological Heritage of the Lenggong Valley Perak (2012), Gunung MuluNational Park Sarawak (2000), and Melaka and George Town, Historic Cities ofthe Straits of Malacca (2008).
1.5 SIGNIFICANCE OF PROPOSED STUDYThe Kinabalu Park, Kundasang Sabah had been recognised by the UNESCO as theWorld Heritage Site. In this study we highlighted some effects of therecognition by the UNESCO and the contribution to the socio-economic growth inthe area. Plus, the recognition also affects the socio-cultural in the area.
As for the people, we can say that the recognition helps them to improve thesocio-economic growth. This is because the Kinabalu Park, Kundasang Ranau hadgot attention in the eyes of the world. Moreover, it is gain more attention dayby day by the tourist. The Kinabalu Park, Kundasang Sabah had been a place bywhich the tourist decides as “must to go”. This is one of the attraction travelplaces in Malaysia.
Since it is becoming an attraction of tourist, in the meantime it can increasethe economic growth not only for the peoples in that area but also to Malaysia.It is the “money-in” for the tourism industry.
