A World Heritage Site is a landmark or area which is selected by the
United Nation Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as
having cultural, historical, scientific or other form of significance and is
legally protected by international treaties. The sites are judged important to
the collective interests of humanity.
The Kinabalu Park, Kundasang Ranau Sabah is one of the UNESCO World Heritage
Site. It is officially recognised by the UNESCO in year 2000. It is had been 17
years after the recognition by the UNESCO and it is an honour because the
recognition is one of the biggest achievement of Malaysia.
The Kinabalu Park is located in Kundasang Ranau Sabah. It is one of the place
which is always been an attraction by the international and local tourist. This
is because we can see a clearly view of Mount Kinabalu in Kinabalu Park. The
Mount Kinabalu is one of the highest mountain in the southeast asia. This is
also one of the reason why Kinabalu Park always been a favourite travel places.
Moreover, the tourist can see the beauty of the nature by themselves since the
place had been preserved to maintain the nature. In the same time, there are
various socio-cultures which is still being practiced until today.
Tourism is seen as the largest industry worldwide which give a high environment
impact to the country. Plus, this industry is one of the sources to increase
the economy of a country. Touri45sm is travel

Other than that, tourism industry is an industry which is very close to our

economy growth and help to stabilize the economic system. We can see through
the Budget 2018 allocation on tourism industry by which the Prime Minister of
Malaysia, Datuk Najib Tun Abdul Razak allocate RM2 billion to improve the
tourism industry including improving the tourism facilities, homestay, and

areas that conserves the environment, sustains the well-being of the local
people, and involves interpretation and education” (TIES, 2015). In
other word, eco-tourism is the combination of two words which are economy and
tourism. From the words itself we can say that tourism industry is so important
for our economy industry.
Tourism industry is not only about to improve the country economic condition
but also to help the country in making the international relation with the
outsider. As we know, tourism can be done internationally which involving the
international tourists. While making profits for the country, a country may
create an international relation with the others.
Malaysia has declared Kinabalu Park
as a National Park in 1964. Since then, its become one of the major of tourist
attraction in Sabah. In year 2000, UNESCO declared Kinabalu Park as its World
Heritage Site. However, Kinabalu Park is already become become main attraction
of tourist since 1964 as such this declaration does not do much to tourism in
sabah. It is been said that such a declaration has been a catalyst to the

Researchers focused on the
socio-economic activities around the area of Kinabalu Park, Kundasang Ranau.
Plus, the study also covered the contribution of UNESCO recognition toward the
socio-economic growth in this area and the effects on the peoples.
The Kinabalu Park, Kundasang Ranau is one of the World Heritage Site
recognized by the UNESCO others than 3 other areas in Malaysia which are
Archaeological Heritage of the Lenggong Valley Perak (2012), Gunung Mulu
National Park Sarawak (2000), and Melaka and George Town, Historic Cities of
the Straits of Malacca (2008).
1.5 SIGNIFICANCE OF PROPOSED STUDY
The Kinabalu Park, Kundasang Sabah had been recognised by the UNESCO as the
World Heritage Site. In this study we highlighted some effects of the
recognition by the UNESCO and the contribution to the socio-economic growth in
the area. Plus, the recognition also affects the socio-cultural in the area.
As for the people, we can say that the recognition helps them to improve the
socio-economic growth. This is because the Kinabalu Park, Kundasang Ranau had
got attention in the eyes of the world. Moreover, it is gain more attention day
by day by the tourist. The Kinabalu Park, Kundasang Sabah had been a place by
which the tourist decides as “must to go”. This is one of the attraction travel
places in Malaysia.
Since it is becoming an attraction of tourist, in the meantime it can increase
the economic growth not only for the peoples in that area but also to Malaysia.
It is the “money-in” for the tourism industry.
